Meet Montana
Each year, Montane offers various internships to university students. Montana completed an eight-week internship over her uni vacation. Here, she discusses her experiences.
What were you most nervous about as an intern?
Initially, I thought I’d only be given the mundane jobs. I expected to get stuck doing a bunch of photocopying and filing. I was worried I wouldn’t learn much. Looking back now, this seems crazy. Because the opposite was true.
My internship was pretty eclectic. I mostly focused on creative and professional writing, and digital media design. But along the way I also learnt a lot about marketing, legal ethics, and human relations. It was the perfect synergy of both my current skills and the ones I wanted to develop.
What does a typical intern’s day look like?
There’s not really a “typical” day at Montane because the schedules are quite varied. I might spend mornings in collaborative meetings or one-on-one mentoring and training. Then afternoons I’d complete tasks and projects that I needed to do alone. I got to work a lot from home, so Montane’s flexibility with allowing for that meant I could choose my own hours (I’m more of a morning person).
What was the hardest part of being an intern?
Montane really pushed me to a higher potential. Sometimes that was challenging. The responsibility to bring a project to life was daunting at first. I was amazed at how trusting the Montane team was and I doubted myself – a lot. But they knew exactly the right amount to challenge me when delegating tasks. There was the expectation of work quality, definitely. But I was fully supported too, which meant I ended up doing stuff I never thought I’d be capable of.
What makes a Montane Internship special?
Montane was an attractive company to work for as it aligned with my values. I want to live with purpose and passion. It was great to be around people as passionate as I am. The energy at Montane is exciting. Even when I was doing things I didn’t like much, the buzz of knowing I was contributing to something bigger than me was huge.
Montane’s flexibility with working arrangements was also great. I wanted an internship program that would complement my studies and allow me to focus at uni. My internship was completed over the vacation period. However, Montane also offers part time internships that allow you to balance study and work with ease.
What did you learn about work?
I know I want my study, work, and leisure time to blend seamlessly. To work on projects that don’t feel like “work” so that my passion for health and looking after people can come through. Montane taught me to aim for a creative life that is authentic and sustainable; where making a difference is the most important thing. This is something no one ever said to me at school. And I love the idea! I’ll carry it with me forever.
Can you see yourself working for Montane long-term?
I get excited when I think about having a future with an intelligent, creative company like Montane. They’re doing projects that I can be genuinely enthusiastic about. I hope Montane can see me as part of their future too.
