Choose an attorney
Learn about how to appoint an attorney with the best fit for you.
Your attorney stands in for you when you can’t make your own decisions. A great deal of care should go into who you appoint. Some things to consider are:
- does the person know, appreciate and respect your values and beliefs?
- does the person have skills in money management, keeping accounts and records and organisation more broadly?
- is the person assertive enough to keep your interests at the fore?
- does the person have a track record of trustworthiness?
There are some restrictions. For example, your attorney must be over 18, can’t be your paid carer or healthcare provider and, for financial powers, must not be bankrupt or insolvent.
